I made an apple pie yesterday and substituted Vitality oils for the spices the recipe recommend. Helloooooo, flavor. Also… the oils have far more health benefits than dried spices and the aroma while it was baking was unbelievable.
It was a great thing to do to celebrate the first day of fall.
When you’re using Vitality oils to replace spices and herbs, a little goes a long way. Typically… I follow this kind of ratio.
1 teaspoon = 2 to 3 drops
1/2 teaspoon = 1 to 2 drop
1/4 teaspoon = 1 drop to Toothpick Trick
To do the toothpick trick, pop the reducer off the top, swirl a toothpick around the oil and then swirl it around in what you are cooking. It gives a good touch of flavor without being too overpowering. I do this a lot in sauces, tea and coffee.
Choosing which way to go on the high/low end of the ratios above really depends on how strong the oil’s flavor is and how it’s tasting as your cooking. So don’t be afraid to add more or less if you think it needs it. Have fun experimenting!
PS – If you’re trying to avoid grains and refined sugars, the Celebrations cookbook by Against all Grain has some of the best desert recipes we’ve ever tried. It is the book pictured here. Our family loves everything I’ve ever made from it and we never seem to miss the flour and sugar in the end result.
